Visiting the dentist isn’t the favorite part of anyone’s day — but for some people dealing with severe fear or anxiety of the dental chair, or for those whose mobility issues or other disabilities prevent them from being able to undergo dental work at all, visiting the dentist is a significant issue. Fortunately, Dr. Ruth Clemans at Elite Dentistry can help to lower these barriers to good dental care — because she’s your Atlanta sedation dentist, too.
Sedation dentistry increases oral health
Dr. Clemans has considerable experience treating patients who have barriers which may prevent them from receiving good dental care. She’s a DOCS-certified sedation dentist and offers three options in sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation and IV conscious sedation. Let’s take a closer look at each.
Also known familiarly as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is good for patients with mild to moderate anxiety undergoing simple procedures, like cleanings, fillings and other easy restorations. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask during treatment, and one of the best things about it is the fact that as soon as the mask is removed, its effects wear off — meaning you can go about your day as normal.
Oral conscious sedation
One of the most popular forms of sedation today, oral conscious sedation can help those with more severe anxiety or disabilities relax throughout significant dental procedures. Oral conscious sedation is achieved by taking a pill about an hour before your appointment — so by the time you’re setting into the dental chair, its effects have taken over and you’re ready to receive your care. This sedative option may also be combined with a local anaesthetic to ensure no pain is felt at the treatment site.
IV conscious sedation
The deepest sedation offered at Elite Dentistry is IV conscious sedation. Usually reserved for the most severe cases of anxiety or disability, or for very long procedures, it’s administered directly into the bloodstream by Dr. Clemans. While you’re technically conscious under the effects of IV sedation, you’re totally relaxed and removed from what’s going on around you. Many patients become so comfortable they doze off during treatment.
