Oral Cancer Screenings
On average, oral cancer causes the death of one person every hour in the United States, and of those patients diagnosed with oral cancer this year, only half will survive more than five additional years. With statistics like that, it’s amazing more people aren’t concerned with oral cancer diagnosis and treatment. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, the best way to reduce the number of deaths from oral cancer is to diagnose and treat the disease in earlier stages. At Elite Dentistry, we are dedicated to helping patients maintain their optimal health from head to toe, and oral cancer screenings every six months are just one of the ways we are able to do just that.
Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer
Many patients believe that only smokers or heavy drinkers get oral cancer, and while these behaviors do increase the risk for oral cancer, nearly 25% of those who suffer from oral cancer do not engage in any of these behaviors. Some of the warning signs and symptoms patients should be aware of and alert their dentist of during regular checkups include:
- Flat red or white sores in the mouth that don’t heal over time
- Pain in the mouth, throat, tongue or lip
- Lumps, inflammation, or swelling inside and outside the mouth, lips, throat, neck, and jaw
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw and tongue
- Swollen jaw that make teeth feel loose or fit together poorly
- Persistent halitosis (bad breath)
- Difficulty speaking, sore throat, and the feeling something is caught in the throat
- Weight loss, nausea
At Elite Dentistry, we take ample time during every dental checkup to examine patients for any of these warning signs and symptoms. We start with a visual examination of the mouth, face, throat, and neck. Then, we carefully search for swelling, lumps, hardened areas, and other points of concerns. If we notice any warning signs, we may recommend further assessment or treatments.
