Dr. Clemans is a DOCS-certified sedation dentist located in Marietta, GA and one of the few dentists certified by the state of Georgia to administer IV sedation. If you’re considering sedation dentistry, Elite Dentistry should be your first choice.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a variety of medicinal options for creating a more relaxed dental experience. Sometimes called “sleep dentistry” this is a bit of a misnomer since only patients under general anesthesia are actually asleep. Dr. Clemans offers sedation dentistry that involves a variety of techniques to relax patients during their visit.
Sedation dentistry isn’t just for those with dental anxiety. It also allows dentists to perform multiple dental treatments in a limited number of appointments. There are four levels of dental sedation: minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia.
Levels of Sedation
Dr. Clemans routinely offers patients minimal, moderate and deep sedation. Minimal sedation or Oral Conscious Sedation is achieved through administration of a common sedative before the visit. As the sedative takes effect and you become more relaxed, Dr. Clemans is able to perform necessary dental procedures without causing undue stress.
Moderate sedation is achieved by inhaling Nitrous Oxide or laughing gas. As you inhale the nitrous oxide, you will find yourself in a state of increased peace and tranquility. While you’re aware of your surroundings, you’ll hardly notice as the doctor improves your dental health.
Deep sedation is administered by IV into the blood stream. While most patients are partially awake for most or all of the procedure, you may relax enough to fall asleep. Digital pulse oximetry continually monitors your blood pressure and respiration so you are in safe hands during your procedure.
The side effects of oral and IV sedation are minimal and diminish quickly so you can return to your normal activities faster. Most patients are able to resume their daily routine the day after sedation.
